SPECIAL REPORT—With rampant
unemployment rates and regular news of company layoffs, there are steps that those who have lost their jobs can do to keep
their heads above the water.
The first act a person who has been
laid off needs to do is to file for unemployment at their local Employment Security Commission office. The Employment Security
Commission of North Carolina has an office locator online at www.ncesc.com/locator/locatormain.asp, however most claimants can easily file online at www.ncesc.com and clicking “individual services.”
If you’ve lost your job and
need to work, don’t pass over an acceptable job. As the job market improves, more opportunities better suited for your
intended career may become available. Furthermore, accepting such a job could be advantageous for a person who is seeking
higher education for the sake of obtaining a long-term career with more advancement and better salary. Seek out night classes
at a community college or technical school. Take an online program through a university
If a person has lost their job and
some time may pass before being rehired, spend your time wisely. Volunteer work is an excellent means to indicate a good work
ethic while you await employment and allows a person to fill in gaps in the work history so as not to look as if you spent
months at home without working.
If a member of a family loses their
job, unemployment benefits will only go but so far. If you have been saving money for a rainy day, consider tapping into it
temporarily. Learn thrifty ways to save money and place the family on a tighter budget until the situation improves. Surprising
savings can be had by: canceling unnecessary landline phones, cutting back to just basic cable, adjusting the thermostat a
few degrees, cutting back on baths and taking short showers, etc. Consider selling items of less importance to you or have
a yard sale to create a little more spending money for necessities.
Lastly, consider asking family, friends
or perhaps fellow worshippers at church if they know of anyone hiring. By asking everyone you know, you may find someone who
is hiring or knows of place that is in need of workers before they advertise, giving you first-chance at a great opportunity.
